DLC, Just Go Away!

I just finished reading an article over at 1up about why Sony decided not to make “Killzone 2″ and “LittleBigPlanet” available as downloadable titles over the Playstation Network. DLC is a topic that I’m very in the dark about, but like paying attention to, none the less. I realize why downloadable titles are a good idea for Sony, Microsoft…whomever; it saves on shipping costs, and since there’s no package to be made, it saves on that too. But I don’t like it.

What I do like is the feeling of going to the store, exchanging money, and coming home with a product I may proudly display on my shelf. Does anyone else feel this way? Because the more I read, the more I feel like I’m part of a dying breed.

I would also have to think that not shipping out games to retail locations would be troublesome for say, umm I don’t know… Gamestop. If companines are going to start offering there titles exclusively as downloadable content, won’t a lot of people in the gaming industry be out of a job? I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be DLC, and downloadable games, as I realize that DLC can be great for smaller companies trying to get their product out there. 2D Boy’s “World of Goo” may be one of the most prolific benefactors to date of the current generations downloadable content capabilities. However, there has been talk of Sony’s intentions to make almost every game in 2009 available for download for the PSP.  I just don’t see this as a good idea. I’m paying $30 to $40 dollars on a game for my PSP, and I want something physical I can show for it.

Since I’m fresh out of college, I’ve hung out  with plenty of experimental/trendy/wanna-be-cool kids who own a record player. And I gotta say, not only is the sound quality top shelf, but the vinyl casings are just as cool as the records. There’s something impressive about being able to show those off those albums, and they not only say something about who you are, but they also look damn cool on the wall as well. That’s a kind of how I feel about game cases, and I hope that I’m never forced to buy my games as downloadable titles only.

I think it would, not only spit in the face of gaming’s history, but in the face of those who work in the gaming industry. I’m not just talking about the employees at EB games, Gamestop, but what about the artists that work for game companies an work on box art? If you’re reading this and feel the same way, sound off below, or try to convince me why downloadable games are a great idea. Either way, I just had to vent. Till tomorrow, gamers.

I’m kinda split on the subject myself. The collector in me wants more games in cases - but the reality of living in NYC means I’m very quickly running outta space …. Where DLC really hurts me is when some of my more collectable games … Ikaruga comes to mind .. get rereleased and lessen the value of my games. Thanks games industry.

Got something to say?
