Ask The Heroes Of Newerth Developers A Question - Get A Free Beta Key

Heroes of Newerth

The very generous folks over at S2 Games have given us a couple of great opportunities. First of all, they are allowing us to do a Q&A with the team that worked on their upcoming game, “Heroes of Newerth.” Secondly, they gave us a whole chunk of beta keys to give away. So, we thought we would pass on their generosity to you.

If you would like get a key to join the “Heroes of Newerth” beta, all you need to do is comment on this post with a question you’d like us to ask the S2 team. We’ll then collect the best of the best, and get them answered for you. In return, you’ll get a beta key emailed to you. Sound like a good deal? Yeah, we thought so too.

The only catch is that you need to comment on the post with your real email address, so we can email the key to you. Don’t worry, we won’t share them with anyone you don’t want us to.

Consider the floodgates opened …

UPDATE (11:45 PM EST 07/29/09): Hey Guys and Girls - thanks for all the questions so far, I just wanted to give you a heads up that it looks like we will be out of beta keys in the next couple of days, so get your questions in as soon as possible. We’ll let you know when we run out, but right now, we’re just running low.

UPDATE #2 (1:00 AM EST 07/31/09): That’s it. We’re finally out of keys. Thank you for all the great questions, and be sure to check back in the coming weeks to find out the answers to your questions straight from the “Heroes of Newerth” developers. If you haven’t recieved a key at this point, then you got your question in too late, or you didn’t actually ask a question. However, even though we are out of keys, feel free to continue to ask questions, and if yours is good enough, we may just include it in the ones we send to the dev team.

How will balance be maintained as more heroes are introduced and the gameplay continues, specifically, will the game be balanced as ice frog balances it, or take on a completely different path?

I’m a noob player in HoN and I have never played DOTA before. The majority of people who plays HoN comes from DOTA which means they are pro and experienced players.
I made a noob game several days ago and got a game going but what I found out later was that none of the players there were NOOB.
    So my question is:
How are you planning to seperate the new players and pre-DOTA player?

It’s very frustrating when you are playing the game for the first time and you have to play against people who played this game for 5 YEARS or more.
The solution I thought is dividing game into different leagues. Noob league/Pro league.
Anyways that’s all I have in mind. Please send my friend a beta invite.

I have played DoTa for a few years but I have several family members and friends who will start playing once this game is released. From my understanding your win/loss ratio is saved and viewable by people once you join games.

My question is will there be a way to hide your stats (Win/Loss)? The community is very harsh and I can foresee them being booted from games due to their inexperience and likely poor record

    Hello.

    My questions for suggestion are:

Will games be balanced out during late-game? I’ve found in DotA that one late-game hero can take up to 3 players. It would be good to find a balance in HoN that requires players to work together in late-game.

What is different about this game that will attract players over WC3: DotA, and League of Legends (another competitor based off of DotA).?

Are there other modes of gameplay within HoN?

I’d really like to see how this game compares to LoL, so I’m patiently awaiting a beta key. Thanks!

Are there going to be maps with multiple teams? That would be interesting as well.

Also will stats like move speed, attack speed, regen, mana regen, etc. be visible (a.k.a have a numerical display somewhere on the UI)?

Are servers going to split up or will there be regional ones like bnet does?

The basic gameplay for DotA was that there was 3 lanes, and a base at the end of each lane, and you had to push through the lanes and destroy the main base of the faction. This seems to remain intact in Heroes of Newerth.

However, I am curious, do you have any plans to create different gametypes for different maps? Such as King of the Hill.

Are there going to be corrupt moderators and admins that will force the new users to stop signing up due to the fear of corruption and animosity put forth by companies like Sulake (for Habbo Hotel) or Jagex (for RuneScape)?

How will the moderators / administrators among players in terms of mediation be selected? — will it be a meritocracy or an autocracy in terms of who is chosen?? — do you believe that the person suited for the job should get the job, or whoever you think you like the best should get the job??

also will the heroes and the map be the same for HON as in dota ? and does anyone know of any good sites for guides and discussion forums for HON like dota-allstars or playdota.com ??

I have played a lot of dota past 4 years and the most interesting thing in dota for me is that it keeps getting better and better as time passes by.
Icefrog develops it all the time and there are new heroes and items to keep it interesting.

    So my question is:
Are you gonna develop this game in co-operation with IceFrog in the future? Or are you going to take an own direction in developing this game and so the genre of these types of games (DotA, HoN, LoL,Demigod)?
I also wonder if there is gonna be held competitive tournaments for this game in the future?

I’ve played DotA for almost 2 years now and I’ve wished to get an upgrade to the game and it seems like HoN is going to answer my call.

How does HoN stand out from the other DotA copies (e.g. Demigod)?

Why should I pick HoN? And are they really committed to upgrade and take care of HoN for years?

How will you address the issue of hero balance, not only inside of the beta, but throughout the life of the game? It seems to be one of the more difficult things about developing this kind of game, something that requires a constant tinkering and great deal of community input and/or play by the developers.

Heroes in Dota have their own story and that is what make it more intriguing, for example King Leoric He is the King of Tristam gone insane when his son was killed on the Church Cellar by Pudge…
The Phrase “Fresh Meat” also comes from Diablo. See where I’m going? Does the Hero In Heroes of Newerth are back-up with their own unique stories or was like a T-shirt with slap on Character????

How much will it cost? Will there be constant updates? Will the transition from DotA to HoN be a easy one? Will there be a system that will help players have more of an incentive to not leave the game during the middle, that seems to be the biggest problem in DotA, people end up becoming frustrated and leaving the game, will there be some sort of system to keep all games kicking and going all the way to the end? Will there be a voice enabled chat system as well as just typing? Will there be a easy system of joining games and filtering through game modes? Will there be a way to prevent people like hosts from screwing up and not putting in the game mode? Will there be a fun clan system for which will help keep the community going in other ways other than pub games? Please send me answers or a cd key so I can figure it all out myself! thanks! I’ve been a stragety game follower ever since I migrated from FPS games to them, and if you know anything about stragety games you know what BnB (bread and butter) and CC (cookie cutter) builds are for these types of games.

Coming from a hardcore DotA player’s point of view, DotA’s heroes all hard their own cookie cutter builds, Treant with refresher, Razor with Maelstrom etc. In HoN, are the heroes going to be determined by their gear and have BnB gear sets, or will things be more interchangable and heroes will be ok without BnB builds?

In DotA people decide how good a player is by their skill / items, so in HoN hopefully items won’t have a big factor on how good someone can be with a certain hero.

What differences are there in hero selection with regards to the different hero types?(Intelligence, Strength, Agility). Will they all play basically the same or will there be vastly different ways to play them?

I’ve seen the game played, and one of reasons for the new engine I’ve read is to break away from the restrictions set by the Warcraft 3 engine. From what I’ve seen however, most of the game is a carbon copy of Dota. How do you intend to set yourself apart from Dota in the future and take advantage of a much more capable engine?

I’d really appreciate an invite ;]

I’ve played DotA for a couple of years, competitively. I love the game and the work the creators put in to it. Recently all my friends have “left” DotA for HoN, and I want to try it out, I hear it has better graphics and better gameplay. My question is, How will HoN get a larger base community excluding the people that have experience with playing DotA or LoL?

I have been playing DotA since I bought Frozen Throne 2 years ago, and I have enjoyed so much. I love the gameplay, it doesn’t require too much “no lifing” to learn how to play it, but of course, if you want to learn every hero in the game, as well as all the items, it’s gonna take a while.
I’ve seen couple videos about HoN, and it truly is like DotA. I have been thinking that how do you guys balance the game? DotA has some overpowered heroes, which sometimes annoy very much, so how are you going to ensure that the heroes are pretty balanced? I know it’s impossible that all the heroes are evenly matched, but have you been able to balance the game so that no, let’s say, strength hero is clearly overpowered when compared to another strength hero? This is maybe the only question I have in mind right now.

Ok, so Im pretty descent at dota and have been playing it for a while, I was really excited when I heard about Demigod, a stand alone game like Dota?? Could it be any good?? NO! Demigod was uneven, slow paced, ran horribly, and was just an overall POS game. How stardock managed to screw it up sooo bad I will never know. Now along come S2, with a couple great games under their belt a company that has already proven themselves. They get smart though, they dont try to recreate dota from scratch, they buy dota off icefrog, for how much, who knows. Then build it up, recreate the heros on a much newer engine, making them all look pretty bad ass from the videos I’ve seen. The map looks exactly the same, the interface looks sharp, heros are looking good, graphics great. I will say I am surprised that blizzard themselves didn’t pick up dota stand alone, but with D3 and SC2 and WoW, well they have their hands full. At the moment S2 looks like they are doing great job on staying to the traditional DOTA style that we all know and love. I cant wait for the game to be fully developed and released.

I would love a beta key if anyone has one. Email me

    Thanks

What are your future visions for HoN? Do you think it’ll be possible for this game to break into e-sports along with big names as wc3 and hopefully sc2? Will there be big changes to the games core or is the general idea to keep true to the dota spirit? I hope to see HoN as a part of major competitions in the future such as the World Cyber Games! An invite to the beta would be incredible!

HON might have potential to become almost as good as dota, maybe, but it takes years of dedication. The most important part of the game is the smoothness and aura of the game. DotA has it. Lets see if this one does. I’d gladly take a peek myself if I had a beta key :)

I just wonder if there will be anything like level rooms like in garena and some ladder events in this game, one of the other things I wonder is if there will be some events, like icefrog does each 09 map with a quest in it.

It has taken me a while to think of a good enough question to ask the developers of HoN, but I believe I have found one that will be useful to all experienced DotA players. I myself have played DotA competitively and for enjoyment alike ever since it has been released, playing BNet pre-release.

To get to my question, in DotA their is setup for teams, like a AoE ult team composed of Earthshaker, Sand King, Tidehunter, Magnus, and Krob. In competitive play, these teams are everywhere. Certain setups that people have to pick bans just to get rid of.

In HoN, will the hero statistics be diverse enough so that their will only be certain team setups, or can things be switched up to be more counter play?

Thanks for reading my question, and answering if you can! :D

I am also curious how HoN “Rosh” will look. More then one special neutral creep will be very good idea also imo! And what about secret shops? Are there more secret shops hiden in the
wood? Will heroes have more than 4 skills? And at last what are minimum PC needs to hold up everything on mAx settings. It’s not problem for me, but few of my friends (who are playing dota also) have slow PC’s. And ofc, when can we expect official premiere of the game?

Do you plan on putting the majority of dota heroes in the game? Will there be tournaments in HoN and prizes? Will buildings and units have different health amounts and faster speed or greater attack?

Ive been playing dota for about 4 years now. I noticed on the live game play the multiple heroes you have to control, since there are 5 icons on the top left of the screen, opposed to just having one hero (unless you have meepo). Microing all the controls for each separate hero would seem a little difficult especially for those newbies who have not been familiarized with all the different controls.

Did you design a simple way to manage all of the controls for all the heroes a player would have to control?

    Thanks!

After that I checked facebook site of HoN cause I wanted too see something more.
Now I want ta participate in beta and see if everything is OK before official release. Maybe there will be some things that could be changed or added like creeps, another monsters like Roshan or item options. Also there are few things that still doesn’t allow me to sleep well, like hero skills.
Now I’m only looking forward to Heroes of Newerth. Keep working on it!

I admit I’ve never thought of the prospects that dota be made into its own game instead of always being under warcraft 3.. When I heard of it I was indeed skeptical.. I’ve seen the videos and I think I’m drooling over it in excitement!!

As with all others here, I hope to get a beta key! Thank you!

My question is this: What can be done about leavers and other game spoilers? Banning system? Merit system?

How about a little suggestion: Having users themselves promote the banning system by themselves without mods having to get their hands dirty.. Each user are able to suggest the person to be banned, supplied by prove (maybe screenshots) to a list, shared by anyone who wants them.. its not perfect, but there must be even a bit of punishment for leavers..

    Thanks.

All right, I have several questions
    1) What’s the influence on the game from the original creators?
    2) Is the voice acting all done? I saw one particular clip with some banshee-ghost-woman saying “By the power of death, IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII RELEASE YOU!” and I have to say, that would get pretty annoying pretty fast.
    3) Is the original spirit lancer skin being kept? Since it’s copyrighted by Square Enix, I don’t see how the could without getting permission, but it would be awesome if they could.
    4) Are they keeping the same heroes? I saw the Devourer, which was basically Pudge, but I’m hoping that they keep more heroes.
    5) Is it a CD game or an online download?
    Thanks!

I’m wondering with all the varieties of this style of game (based on dota), what do you think makes Heroes more enjoyable than its alternatives (Demigod, Dota for example)?

I think it’s nice for people who enjoy this type of game because you get to see a couple different interpretations on the same style of play. Good competition too.

I would love a beta key so I can see first hand as to what Heroes has to offer.

Q1: There is a lot of discussion on the way this game will be funded going forward, whether it is a monthly fee, a one-time fee, etc. Have you considered using a Free Play model similar to Dungeons and Dragons Online where the core of the game is free (with maybe 6 heroes available per side), but players can purchase heroes to play, maps, items, etc?

Q2: Are there any plans to provided a map creation tool similar to WCIII?

    hi,

first of all i would like to know when HoN will be released. further more, will there be any new maps follow? is the game the same like dota - the modes (-ap, -ar, …), the barracks to get mega-creeps, the secret and the goblin shop, the neutrals to jungle, roshan, denying, etc? what will be the difference between HoN and DotA? how many items will there be? how many skills each character will have? how many item-slots each character will have? what are the requirements for my PC? will the requirements be so low, that even people with an old computer can play it, like DotA? - i dont think so, but i hope you watched that out. will there be a secret boss, that drops a real unique item, but will be very hard to kill? how do you manage the online-modus? p2p, do we get servers, etc? is it also possible to skill stats? is it maybe possible to skill an other way like dota? - let’s say maximum level is 25 like DotA and you can skill only one skill to level 25 if you want it?

does HoN will cost money every month or just the game?

i think that will be enough.

i hope i will get a key, so i can watch out myself. ;)

    bye.

Did u like making the game? And what was the most fun in the process?

And did u coroporate with any others when making the game? Like the dota team or blizzard or anyone else?

And how did it feel to make a game that is inspired by a so popular game as DotA?

    Thanks Alot

I played Demigod in hope for a game nearly like dota. I got bitterly disappointed So i dont want to waste more money for just testing games. So my question is how do you intend to implement new heroes? Will there be some Patches periodically like dota or do you got completely other plans on adding heroes in The Heroes Of Newerth?

…plus what are you planning to do about leavers? Sry but i have to ask that question. Leavers are destroying every public game. Thats so ****** annoying. I hope there will be something like a punishment system xD

I hope you turned your primary point of view on the complexity of the pvp system like interupting channelings, using the fog for not getting hit by enemys, denying Kreeps, last hits on kreeps to get more and more gold, sentry wards for invis, active spells on items liek hex chicken silence…
At least i hope it doesnt end in pushing button one and two to kill a hero and win the game or non-balanced items and heroes…
There is so much i want to know but for know that should be enough to satisfy my curiosity

Are all the games gonna be ranked and kept stats on? So you can know who are the leavers/pros/noobs?

How are leavers punished? Is there a ranking system to punish those who don’t stay?

Are there going to be a level system or experience system as to games won ect ect, that will unlock new features or somewhat? Or will it be a just for fun game, with the now and there tornaments?

    Betaaaa!

My questions is:The game will have something to identify good players from bad ones like a ladder for better games?
If i could get a beta that would be nice.
