3D Realms Goes Six Feet Under
3D Realms, the maker of “Wolfenstein 3D” and “Duke Nukem 3D” has closed its doors, thus leaving the development of the long rumored “Duke Nukem Forever” up in the air.
Sources close to Shacknews and The Escapist are reporting that the developer is closing down after producing some of the most iconic 3D FPS games of the last 20 years.
This news puts a couple of games from the Duke Nukem universe in question, most notably “Duke Nukem Forever” which has been in development, well… forever. Announced way back in 1997, the game has gone under the radar for many years, only peeping its head out for an occasional screenshot. In a statement to G4, Take-Two representatives stated that “Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever.” While that’s not exactly an enduring endorsement for the game, at least it keeps the doors open.
Not all is lost, however. “Duke Nukem: Trilogy,” a platformer for both the PSP and DS has not been scrapped, and continues to be in development by Apogee Software. Apogee Software LLC formed last year as an external company from 3D realms.
So TGH’ers, will we ever see the release of “Duke Nukem Forvever?” Probably, but it may just take another 12 years. Perhaps it could be a launch game for the PS5. Sound off below.
