Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Producer Picks His Favorite Box Art

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Box Arts

When Japanese games get ported for a U.S. release they usually go through a lot of changes. There are the obvious ones like text localization, along with some less obvious ones like fixing bugs, but there’s usually one that is obvious to the consumer right away – the box art. When the changes for the U.S. release of “Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes” were announced it quickly became clear that the box art was going to have to change, simply based on the additions and subtractions to the roster, but the overall changes run a bit deeper than that. I recently had the opportunity to talk to the game’s producer, Ryota Niitsuma, about the box art differences between “Ultimate All-Stars” and “Cross Generation of Heroes,” and then had him pick his favorite … and you might be surprised by his selection.

“When we made the Japanese one we wanted to make Ryu and Ken the Eagle the main ones, like they’re presenting this to the fans and the audience, ‘Here we are come look at us.’ But for Americans, we wanted to emphasize the fact that it was a Vs. series game, so we wanted to have both teams in opposition of each other facing off to create that feeling of excitement that you’re going to play a fighting game. And, of course, we talked with the designer going from the Japanese to the American one when he drew this, but personally speaking I guess I like the American one because it feels like a fighting game.”

I followed up by asking adding the art from the game’s manual into the mix, and we both agreed that, in fact, that was the best out of the three.

So, it looks like the updated box art for the updated box is a winner. It’s just a wonder why the illustration for the manual didn’t make it to the cover.
