Last Week In Gaming …l

Someone should have told the young man at Blogeek.com.br about marketing vengence. The Brazilian based blog site was the first site to post pictures of Street Fighter IV if you didn’t know. Capcom marketing didn’t take it too lightly, following up with a few warnings, threats, and suits scaring the one-man site into dark corners of Street Fighter. The point is, he blogged about something that a ton of people would have found out about anyways across the blog-verse. Maybe they were trying to time online blog news?

And what a saucy, spicy, paprika filled week it was. Where to begin? David Gertsmann is the game reviewer that we all didn’t know who we claimed to know and love at Gamespot reviews this past week. In the spice filled portion of this weeks gaming soup, Gertmann was fired from Gamespot for reasons less comparable to poor job performance. As a matter of fact, the saying goes is that he was let go from his position simply because he gave Kain and Lynch a less than stella score.

And so Mario, the first King of Gaming, has arrived. Mario is good, especially if he has a special place in your heart, the little guy knows how to suck you into a void of no return. Consider a friends quote: “dude, I may pick up a WII just to play this game.” Perhaps it’s that warm fuzzy feeling or tingle you get from playing a Mario game. Regardless, the game is cool and hands down the best titles to hit the WII. Get if you own a WII or go for the SP Edition if you dare.

Last week in Gaming … Consoles?

What’s going at the WII camp - not that much, not that little either. I think that GT should go easy on the Mario Galaxies trailers, I use to actually enjoy seeing a new mario stage for the first time but I may see the entire game online if I’m not careful. Hmm what else is there - table tennis got announced. You know … that rockstar game that was almost impossible to play on a 360 controller has finally found a home worth living in. If it aint broke bring it. XBoX360 - echoes of Ninja Gaiden continue to reverberate as Ps3 fanboys are continually bullied by 360 fanboys, and eventually spawn a WII fanbaby that thinks they are wasting time and should spend more time with their games. This Week in Gaming

October 27, 2007

What constitutes good research? How do you protect your intellectual property? Who is responsible for aiding in you in that action? How much effort will suffice to protect it? Hasbro and its partners did not see this one coming …

Apparently you can print Eye of Judgement cards that will work with the new PS3 title of the same name. Perhaps this does not fall along the lines of what to do but you have to wonder with the way kids are these days just how blurred are the lines of morale actions. Vidoes of putting their BluRay game DVDs in a microwave to later see if it will run are examples of the extent gamers go. Nor do the new found abilities to HACK HD DVDs, copy them, make backups of some 20 gigs of data via ISO images and the like. There’s no limit it would seem. Think of the strain a R&D department must go through, and resulting thoughts for the above news - ” we didn’t see that coming guys, sorry.” What’s it all for if your creative perspective can’t survive two weeks in the see of customer appreciation deviousness.

And with the bad, there’s always some good; no matter how small it may be. My breathren believe that I am ignoring the 360 world but I perhaps have more exposure to it than they would ever think. I have to admit, that taking a look at XBLA always leaves me impressed, especially with the rescent announcement of Omega 5. For those that know me well, I am a huge shooter fan, and if you didn’t know, XBLA has tons of that. Omega 5 looks to fit the bill very nicely.

Another adage in life is - “if it aint broke don’t fix it.” True to the core. Even more apparent with those Dual Shock Rumble ads that have been hitting PS3-dom lately. The most recent incarnation comes in the Motorstorm with the new 3.0 Patch, that not only adds more elements to online play but rumble support as well. Perhaps owning up to the fact that your motherboard still melts falls in this realm as well, even when you take an elite-est approach to the matter. Interestingly, every angle has scratches, bad points, good points, so-sopoints, and more, but then masses pick sides, or shells out untolds amount of cash and picks all sides. Is this the only way out, or into, gaming? What’s the real driving factor an action like that?

Perhabs not the $841 million loss that Sony posted not long ago. Still, the firm also reported total sales up to $9.2 billion. Hmmm. It’s hard to take in these numbers right? I found much harder to accept another game to approach the space horror genre though, Dead Space. This is a realm that has been explicitly claimed by System Shock and perhaps one of those AVP games. Still it looks impressive but can they deliver on that promise?

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=27173" height="392" width="480" /]

Let’s hope so because the genre hasn’t been tackled in a while.

Recently in Gaming …

September 26, 2007

It has been a while since I did a perspective look on things, so I decided to take a shot at it and see if I could pull together all good and the bad that’s happened from late this summer till now. I’m not sure where to start but E3 may be fitting. What a shit event that was, and clearly dominated by Sony. They needed to move that much clout to since the on-going rumor of that 40G PS3 is still being ushered around the net today. This a unit that was rumored for release in the UK. Kill it if you see it - it’s BS. Why? What’s the point in Sony releasing a SKU that will not support Guitar Hero, Eye Toy and other peripherals? If they do, God help them.

Sega doesn’t need any help convincing me that I need to get a copy of Yakuza 3 though. It would seem that the production expenses incurred by Team Ninja for Heavenly Sword haven’t swayed other producers to cut back on spending for game production. Sega has also announced that they to will use an all star cast to do the voice over [maybe mo-cap] for Yakuza. Perhaps Sony got offended and drop a Hakitori Yakuza Bomb on Home recently in fears of spending too much money on an ambitious thing. Funny thing about Home is that we didn’t know it was coming, and it was promised, went to beta, and went right back to the drawing board after beta testing started. Users who are lucky enough to take part in Home Beta were not happy with it and Sony, it would seem, in rare form, took that to heart; subsquently holding off the release of Home till it reaches mass appeal.

What, or who, is more appealing though is Masata-San, Maegawa Masata that is - head huncho over at our favorite shoot’em up [Great Movie!!!] house, Treasure. Having made impressive things like Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, and Guardian Heroes is not enough and so he has promised that previous and new titles will hit PSN soon enough [maybe]. Soon enough for Julian Eggerbrecht of Factor5 to start to pointing out the bad in Warhawk. Considering how Lair got trashed by yours truly, and several other game sites out there, its only fair he defend his title [a beautiful title that is]. What’s not beautiful is the following quote -

“I see motion-sensing as a complimentary, additional new step in terms of control … “

I’m dying to know why you can’t use the analog sticks then??? Better yet are those stick characters from Flow, who are due for an update. It will be interesting to see what they can come up with for my Hooka-smoking sessions. Dante may need more than a toke on the Hooka after that drop kick he got in the jaw from Neo; the new bad boy in DMC. If Capcom was trying to let us know that Neo was/is no Raiden, a la MGS, they have clearly made their point - this boy has problems and kicks some seeee’rious hass. Too bad you won’t get your Rumble on with Neo though. Maybe in Spring 2008 PS3 controllers will shake your world. Never saw a need for that feature but hey, my girlfriends like it. They all wonder if it were circular what it would mean …?

If you can say “Quick Response Time Is What I Got” ten times as fast, that’s how fast MS responded to those horrible-horrible Halo 3 discs that got shipped out by who knows who. We can’t really blame MS here, but hey everyone else is … sooooo they decided to fix the problem themselves [suspicious right?]. MS swiftly provided a return policy to its faithful in the form of a full replacement, no extra charge. It would be shameful not to mention that the peace of gaming greatness cost $140.00 [e'Note: $69.99]ÂÂ Halo SE Sets. Hmm, $140.00? So I guess a lot of people will be buying those GTX cards after all?

If that’s a trend for game prices then titles better look as hot as FF XIII Versus. The new FF XIII currently has a very strong hold on the Top Ten List over at Famitsu Magazine as the second Most Anticipated Game. Trumped by Dragon Quest-Sama of course. What does it all mean? Hell if I know, especially after those play tests comments about White Knight Story. I’m really impressed with the lush environments in that game - it may set a standard.

The results for that play test have all been positive and its good to hear that FF won’t be the only thing to go home early for. Still, they can’t release that Jericho Demo soon enough for my tastes, even though its due Thursday of this week. I just want to play it so badly. Its’ no crysis killer but the enemy designs in that game appeals to my darker nature and hopefully yours.

Don’t get me wrong there are tons other great looking games that we don’t know about yet. No not Crysis. No one will be able to play that thing without having deep pockets in my opinion. . I’m talking about Dead Space, a new title by Electronic Arts that may just turn your eyes away from Jericho for a minute or two. As long as it has nothing to do with that yet another telekinesis and time pausing powers, I’m good. Check out the site. What’s that? Master Chief you say … never heard of ‘em. Good co-op stuff though. ^_- Laterz.

This week in Sony

July 7, 2007

Well, what an interesting week this was. Transformers got released and you either loved it or hated it. I can’t say the same about the game, but then again if you love massive robot destruction, what’s not to like? An interesting thing happened on the way to the bank, when Sony realized that the PS3 was being sold for $499 around select locations around the country. Honestly, after an extra controller, memory card converter, 3-4 games, that price cut is more like a slap in the face!

ps3499

Whether this is Sony Official or just some store clerk hi-jinks is remained as to be seen. An interesting thing happened to Medal of Honor. Yea, I know you’re fed up of war games but I’m still going to talk about them so deal with it. Besides, after the recent trailers for Call of Duty 4, you can’t deny that that game looks tight! Tight enough to force the team over at Medal of Honor to delay their next iteration of WWII warfare. Rumor has it that they are actually not working on a perfect port for the PS3 but instead stuck in some type of DLL Hell scenario. Guys if you’re not bettering my gaming experience why bother? If its not gonna look like the trailers below then I’m not interested - my low attention span needs to be caressed by non-stop action.

If things were any more hellish for the PS3, it would be opportunistic of me to point out that the PS2 outsold the PS3 this week. Place WTF expression here. Yeah I know, the PS2 is a god among gaming consoles regardless of the camp that you adhere to. It wasn’t that much any ways, the PS2 sold about 16K units, and the PS3 sold about 11K. Look at it this way, at least they are being bought, regardless of price cuts being true or false. All bets aside, maybe that new Parkour game will lighten up things for a bit, as daddy PS2 continue to rake the doe long after his time has passed. If it plays anything like this I’m in.

lr

There is a new Last Remnant trailer roaming the net as the private E3 event is about to be held soon. Expect more cool videos but what I would really like is for PSN network to start putting up more of the demo’s from E3. I think that would drive users into a crazy fit if Sony was able to pull that off. It’s not fair though, cuz Square Enix rescently announced that the FF will not see the light of my translation skills till next August. No silly, August 2008! Personally, the fact that Oracle started shipping Cardboard Laptops is more impressive.

Now you guys know I love busting the Church of Englands chops about that FOM incident. You know, the one where they bashed Sony for desecrating holy ground. Yes, I am a religious man if you’re wondering, but honestly when religion is used in vain or for self promotion I scuff at it. The church issued a holy digital commandment as follows -

  • Respect our sacred spaces as places of prayer, worship, peace, learning and heritage.
  • Do not assume that sacred space interiors are copyright free.
  • Get permission from the faith leaders who are responsible for the building interiors you want to clone.
  • Support the work of those engaged in resisting the culture of gun crime and those involved in promoting the work of conflict resolution.

That’s kind of interesting because the last clause kills the first two. Good enough I guess. It doesn’t matter, because these clauses are being drowned out by the fanatic yells of PSP owners as a release date for FF Tactics and its box art made its way onto the internet this week anyhow. However, the booing wont stop from the added cost to the PS3 controller’s new iteration that will include more touch sensitivity. My girlfriends hate me already. Especially when I will stay up late, some time in the near future to play that new Turok game. Yea I know, Turok has had one game [this is true because the others don't matter though we learn from them]. The new and improved beast looks interesting at least.

Hey Josh, you guys need to release that game now, because it looks sweet. Hopefully this one will be done right. An interesting fact about this title is that it’s actually being developed for XBOX, XBOX360, PS2, and PS3! These guys are giving Starbreeze, the creators of Chronicles of Riddick: EFBB and The Darkness, a run for their money after that comment about developing for multiple next gen consoles. Check out the trailer above for an in-depth look at this title and see you next week.

Sony Updates …. and other tid bits.

June 9, 2007

Damn them All to Hell

Sony has some serious explaining to do about making a game machine that can push “photo realistic” images of cathedrals and what not damn it. As if things couldn’t get any more worse over at ye creator of George Forman Grill with Spidey Text. They now have to deal with the fact that there poster child, Insomiac Games, creators of Resistance, have defiled the very existence of the Church of England. That’s a big ass lie and we know it.

liar

Not only are the priests in an uproar but in a back sided compliment, the PS3 has been chimed by the church for too closely replicating the famous house of worship and defiling its representation around the world with guns, demons, and destructions. Hey, I like my post apocalyptic cathedrals in full detail thank you very much! Besides, game companies have been doing that for years, I think I hear the cash cow Father.

Something Special

In better news, something huge is about to hit the PS Network on Monday. No one knows what it is … but people have several guesses. That includes an early release of Home, more f’ing download-able games, or perhaps an actual playable demo of Killzone 2. Personally, I think the game has gotten too much hype and I wish the team over at Killzone 2 all the luck in delivering a tech demo shown from two years ago. We know its not possible by now, so give it a rest! Besides every year you take longer, our expectations will get so high, that no matter what you release, when you release it, we’ll just laugh at it like those demons from the Viva Pinata game. I don’t mind being wrong though. My guess is that they’ll finally release that Resistance update, which was delayed again this week, with even more hell hounds and Chimera traversing around and in the Church of England.

Nominations

Sony was nominated for delivering best new Intellectual Property and an award for Publishing Hero. Apparently you want Big S to publish your games, they are good at it. I guess Sony passing the 1 Million units sold in EU this week may be to blame. Hey, its not a WII game, but even Supa-Rub-Dub got nominated for innovation. Who the F is giving out these things anyways? I’m guessing if they had built rumble into the controller in the first place, all those silly fanboys would have felt so much more at home regardless of bad hype. When you’re spoiled your spoiled rotten fanboy.

Releases

Well, Killzone will not be released till 2009. Just kidding, but honestly at the rate things are going, what other date sounds plausible to you anyways? Assassins Creed got moved to November but the Eye Toy is looking to make its debut sooner than you can say “Get me a box of cracker jacks Mum”. MGS Magnum Opus Special Edition with Yellow Tan Foily Wrap may be released says Kojima.

Kojima-san is a Genius

Okay, what about the regular one? Lair, which I thought was released already is due … soon. I’m not giving a date, because you know, its just gonna come out when they get that damn loading issue sorted out. Vegas will be upon PS3 soon, and I will finally get to enjoy this awesome XBOX360 title. From what DaGamers have said here, it was worth it, and they have lost many a night playing online with it. Here’s hoping for a descent version of a great game. Personally, Ninja Gaiden Sigma needs to be out already. I finally beat the demo on hard, and couldn’t make it past the first section on very hard. I’m wondering if they’ll add impossible to the difficulty? I’m always up for a challenge!

Special

Of all the news this week, what really caught my eye was that Soul Calibur 4 will be premiered in the next issue of EGM. I am really looking forward to see what they can do with that game. I’m dying for an online brawler and I know “frame” whatever causes problems but honestly in the world of Namco brawlers, your punch, kicks, and slashes go through rocks, and your opponents appendages all the time. Wanna see a grown man b&t@%? Go to Chinatown Fair in NY, NY, if you don’t believe me and learn that you are not ready for brawlers yet. You will have to excuse me but please release a descent game Bandai Namco! And you know what, if Puss In Boots is in the game, I’ll STILL BUY IT!

Force Unleashed

May 27, 2007

extremeForce1

The last Star Wars game that I actually enjoyed playing, besides Lego Star Wars, was the storm troopers FPS game with squad based tactics. Enter Force Unleashed, that looks like the Star Wars game that every fanboy has had a wet dream about: just pure miss-use of a clandestine power. LUCASARTS answered many a gamers’ call when they decided to make this type of game and with a solid foundation defined by “Kicking someone’s ass using the force”. How can they go wrong? Guessing by the video demo below the only thing that boggles my mind is who will actually give your character a challenge during the game itself? Set between Episode III and Episode IV, you’ll play as the secret apprentice of Vader. There in you will have the ability to over-max four main force abilities, grip, push, repulse, and lightning. So you will not just be able to force push someone, but instead force push them through walls. This implies that LUCASARTS may have created a fully destructible environment schema that may impress us yet.

The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd. Pixeleux is a company that was created as a result of the massive requirements and expectations that are being set for next gen titles by providing services for one of the most expensive parts of video game development: asset creation. NaturalMotion is more precisely known for the creation of DMS: Dynamic Motion Synthesis in which the creation of dymanic offline physics based animation are created within a RAD [Rapid Application Development] environment. Physics is cool and all but it could mean squat in a video game if the story has no weight. LUCASARTS promises that the story will be user defined as the final outcome of the game will be based on the path you take. We can see where this is going already but how well it is implemented is another story. Force Unleashed is due for release this November.

ELITE

March 28, 2007

It’s official - XBOX360 … now elite. You will soon be able to purchase your XBOX with high definition output [didn't that come with it already or is component not HD ... hmmm?] but unlike another black box will come with its own HDMI cables, and like another black box sport one wireless controller, blu-ray … errr HD DVD drive and those HD options like pulse code modulation, 1080p, and TrueHD …. at an attempt to sell HD DVDs errr More XBoXeses at $479. I guess its working for Sony so it should work for Big MS in the blu-ray… I mean sales department.ÂÂ Fanboys rejoice.
