Oily, Messy, Fun – Capcom introduces Ya?l? Güre? to SSF IV!

hakan2

Seriously, Capcom’s Super Street Fighter IV developers was having a great ol’ time when you take a look at the new Hakan character. Impressions are divided – you either love him or you hate him.  Hakan is, by far, one of the greatest odd balls for Capcom to release onto the general populous in a long time. [Continue Reading]

Street Fighter IV: Championship Edition Update

Capcom just sent us a lovely little email detailing some of the contents in the new update to “Street Fighter IV”; “Street Fighter IV – Championship Edition.” The name size increase in the title is geared towards “serious players”. I am puzzled by that statement because many would agree that those trial and challenge mode challenges aren’t meant for scrubs.  The new mode will expand the game by offering players the chance to compete in tournaments and to watch replays of the best tournament matches.  That’s awesome, now we can see worldwide beat downs and share it with friends. No word on how the sharing of said beat downs may occur though but expect to see rampant video postings of “look I can do this combo” and such on the internet.

I know what you’re saying, “damn, another add-on!”   Well fret not Wondering Warrior, it comes at no cost.  The Championship Mode update will be available for both PS3 and Xbox 360 owners on Friday, April 24 (times TBD) for free.  There will be 5 different grades of tournaments – “creating the right challenge for players of every skill level”.  You will score points for tournament wins, and as your total points grow you’ll get the chance to enter into bigger tournaments.

Street Fighter IV Review: Kickin’ It Old School

“Since this title is a direct sequel to SF II, things like air blocking and exceedingly long air combos do not exist…”

Before I begin this review I would like point out something: I don’t believe in reviews without adequate exposure to a proper title. I say “proper” because it’s almost impossible to do a review without an unlocked title these days. Indeed you can buy a game on release day, and begin your review process to submit it by your deadline for release week, but that would go against my beliefs. My point being that one can only appreciate the nuances of a title with adequate time spent with it. Even though “Street Fighter” has been around for decades, a rushed review does not make sense.

As a matter fact, it’s been about ten years since the Roman numeral in the “Street Fighter”’s title changed. With stiff competition from its predecessors, and other titles from SNK and the Guilty Gear team, “Street Fighter IV” has to bring more than just fireballs and shoryukens. Regardless, the title turns out to be pure genius for some, and bittersweet for others. What it does bring to the table is everything you know about “Street Fighter II” as well as some new mechanics. The new stuff comes in the form of a new tech move dubbed “Focus Attack” (hold medium punch and medium kick), ultra combos, and some new fighters that aren’t just fireball throwing heavies. Add that to the fact that the game runs in 3D, adheres to its 2D heritage playing field, and visually flared with a Japanese Ink brush, intense colors, decent sound effects and has a fan questioning soundtrack. All of these aspects coalesce to make one of the better fighting games to be released in a long time. Nevertheless, it is just another fighting game, but it’s one that’s done very well. At times the game clings to its roots too strongly, yet with time you come to acknowledge the conjugated old and new mechanics. [Continue Reading]

A Gamer’s Thoughts: Street Fighter IV’s Music

Whut up folks! Got some more “Street Fighter I”V talk. This time around it’s about the music selection within the game and the odd choice Capcom made with one of the tracks. Do you like the soundtrack, dislike it? Drop a comment below about your thoughts.

A Gamer’s Thoughts: What’s Wrong With Street Fighter IV

Whut up folks! Unit here bringing you some of my thoughts as a gamer. I’ll be posting up these videos from time to time discussing whatever’s on my mind from the world of gaming. To start things off, I wanted talk about a little known (or maybe not so little known) problem in the recently released “Street Fighter 4″ … I think most of you that’ve played the game will know what I’m talking about. Now Some of you may agree with I say, some may not. But whatever the case, feel free to leave a comment below and let yourself be heard. Peep the video and enjoy!

Street Fighter IV Storms Up … A Laugh?

OMG!  Before I wail on the American voices in “Street Fighter IV,” I want to point out something; my Japanese gaming friends tell me that they themselves cannot stand the Japanese voice overs in game. As a matter of fact, they hate them as much we hate American voice overs. However, we can all coexist when the British come through,  “Final Fantasy XII” is proof of that.  Case and point: the latest “Street Fighter IV” Trailer:

Don’t worry, I pre-ordered mine anyways. Somehwere in the options I hear you can specify each characters’ default language/region; like how “SFIII” was … by default!  From a marketing stand point, its obvious they’re hitting up that Saturday Morning Cartoons crew (if you call that SMCs these days).

E3 2008 – Street Fighter IV … Parry?

Perhaps not the parry proper, but a descent evolution of it. We all wondered what those tech moves where when we first got a glimpse of it back way back when the first trailer for this game aired.

It’s actually interesting to see how this will play out in battles. Unlike before, when you parried a moved, you were stuck in your characters animation stance for half a second or two. Now, in SFIV, this is a lot of time, you can capitalize on that loss time. Here in this new trailer you see that your character takes the damage, and moves on to deliver his/her blow tot he opposing character.

This is nothing new if you’ve been following fighting games for a while, but the above video shows how the idea for the new system (Revenge) should workout during battles.

SFIV – Animation Clip (Spoilers)

If you don’t mind seeing some spoilers like myself, check out this long animated clip from the upcoming release of Street Fighter IV.  The thing is, the clip still still doesn’t answer the burning question: is Shen Long playable in the game?  However, all hints from the clip show him alive and well and given the time period in which this title takes place, it’s looking more and more plausible that the powerhouse will be playable.  In addition to Ono’s comment with EGM/1upShow that “we wouldn’t put such a high profile character in the clip if they weren’t accessible” makes you wonder even more.

Ono-san made a good point back in his interview with 1up.com that the main 12 will be back and that’s a good thing but he can’t ignore the love that SF III has generated over the last ten years. Yea, it’s been that long. Minus our Jackie Chan jokes, we love the series and still fight over top players to this day. I mean, they still have competitions in Japan for that game, so bringing back one/two popular characters from that lot is not a bad thing.

More importantly though, gamers are also interested in what’s new, and so far two new faces have been added; Crimson Viper and Abel [above, courtesy IGN.com]. OH yea, he has a giant Cod-Piece to. Just thought I’d point that out since its the talk of the town with Ryu and Ken these days.

Capcom Poors it on Some More

combosoup

As if serving up SFIV, and the PS3 version of Lost Planet wasn’t enough for this clandestine group, they had to drop an entirely new IP on us. Capcom recently pushed out videos of a new game called Dark Void. The titles’ expected release is either mid 2008 or late Christmas 2008. The premise of the game goes like this -

Something is consuming out the universe, a vast and ancient force almost beyond our comprehension. Millions of years ago, the minions of that power found their way to the 3rd planet of an unremarkable yellow star. Ours. The race they created came to call their masters “The Watchers. For a millennium we knew them as Gods and served their dark purposes, but a few humans developed extraordinary powers. They were known as the Adepts and they rose up, banishing The Watchers into a parallel universe, where they have manipulated and schemed from afar. Until now.

And so, everything comes in combos from Capcom. Take a peek at the video below:
