2009’s Best Retro Revivals: What’s Old Is New Again

Punch-Out!!

2009 wasn’t just the year of big name releases; there was also a very obvious attempt to revive some of gaming’s longest running franchises. While that’s not necessarily a new idea, it seemed like in this past year developers actually attempted to keep the feeling of the original games instead of just taking the name of a franchise and slapping it on something completely new. Take a look at some of the classics that received some nostalgic love this year, and reminisce about the good old days as you cross your fingers that 2010 holds the same retro goodness. Punch-Out!! Review: Back In The Ring With A Vengeance

Punch-Out!!

It’s always been amazing to me how some video game franchises can withstand the test of time, and others just fade away. It’s been 15 years since gamers have been able to get their hands on a new “Punch-Out!!” game from Nintendo, but with the release of the Wii everything old is new again (except “Kid Icarus” apparently). Whether it’s your first time stepping into the ring with Little Mac, or just your first time since Nintendo felt the need to put the word “super” in the title of all their games (even the not so super ones), “Punch-Out!!” on the Wii is a welcome experience. Watch Punch-Out!! Step Into The Ring At The Nintendo World Store

Punch-Out!!This past Saturday, Nintendo went all out at their World Store in Rockafeller Center in New York City to celebrate the launch of their latest “Punch-Out!!” game. It’s been fifteen years since the last “Punch-Out!!” was released for the Super Nintendo, and if the fans that turned out for the launch event at the Nintendo World Store prove anything, there are still a lot of people out there who love the franchise. Check out our video to get a look at the event, and watch some Little Macs in the making as we give you a look at the everything that went on including some a look at the tournaments that Nintendo hosted, and, most importantly, those amazing pink “Punch-Out!!” hoodies. Casting Call For Real Life Punch-Out! Think You’d Make A Good Piston Honda?

Piston HondaCraig’s List is a bastion of interesting … stuff. While my insomnia was inspiring me to peruse NYC’s video game related job openings I came across this casting call that some old-school Nintendo fans might find particularly interesting. If you ever thought, “Damn, I’d make a good Piston Honda” I may have found just the thing for you.

“EDP Casting is currently looking for Real People to portray characters from the classic video game “PUNCH-OUT!!”

And here’s the particulars of what they are looking for in real life “Punch-Out!” characters: [Continue Reading]

GDC ‘09: Punch-Out!! Gameplay Videos

I will admit that I am not much of a sports fan, but “Punch-Out!!” was always one of my favorite games. It felt more like a video game were you had to fight end bosses, as opposed to a game emulating a real life sport. After looking at these videos and reading IGN’s hands on article, I am even more excited for this new entry in the long-running franchise. Check out the videos below at what looks to be a return to glory for Little Mac. On another note… I love the animations on the characters when they get hit… especially Glass Joe’s stumbling reaction. LOL! [Continue Reading]

GDC ‘09: Did the Ladies Call Him Little Mac Too? New Punch-Out!! Trailer!

Hola everyone. News on the GDC front seems a tad slow this year, but Nintendo was kind enough to show off a new trailer for “Punch-Out!!”, and it looks pretty bad ass. Little Mac returns to kick King Hippo’s butt in this nostalgic trailer. Von Kaiser and Glass Joe will also return to take on our hero in the ring, as well as a newcomer who goes by the name Disco Kid.

Is it just me or does Disco Kid remind anyone of Carlton from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”? When he dances around the ring, it looks  just like the Carlton dance! Am I right, or am I right?

So far, Wii users have only been able to play “Punch-Out” on their virtual consoles, but it looks like Nintendo is taking great care in bringing this storied franchise to the Wii. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Sadly, Nintendo has not set a date for “Punch-Out.”

Check out the trailer after the jump, and keep it here for continuing GDC coverage. [Continue Reading]
