Is the New PSP Metal Gear Actually Metal Gear 5?

Metal Gear Peace WalkerWhile most gamers got their first looks at the next installments in the “Metal Gear” saga at E3, many questions remained. Thankfully, in an interview released by Konami, Hideo Kojima has finally shed some light on the “PSP’s “Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker,” and even refers to the heandheld’s entry as a “MGS5-class game.”

Big Boss’ latest foray into the world of tactical espionage action will primarily feature more replayability and offer more customization options then traditionally available in previous Metal Gear’s. “For example there’s heavy gear configurations that make a lot of noise, but that allow you to equip numerous weapons,” Kojima said. “Or, there are other configurations that won’t allow you to carry many weapons, but will allow you to be light on your feet. We will be preparing a variety of other types as well. Being able to make decisions and plot a strategy will be one of the really enjoyable features of this title.” [Continue Reading]

E3 ‘09: Microsoft Sets the Stage – Project Natal Unveiled

E3 09

Coming into today, many people had guesses on what either Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft had to offer at their individual press conferences, but few could have guessed just how impressive Microsoft’s press conference would actually be (and that’s coming from a huge Sony fan). Microsoft not only introduced the next, exciting wave of traditional software; Modern Warfare 2 footage, a new arcade game from Cliffy B. and company, and Alan Wake, but also revealed new technology in the form of Project Natal – a medium which may change the world of gaming as we know it. My Big, Fat E3 Wish List

E3 09

So gamers, E3 is only a couple of days away, and there is much to be excited for. The rumor mill has been working overtime for this year’s expo, even more so then in years past. With a slew of hardware and software debuts rumored to be on the way, this year’s E3 is shaping up to be epic, but with so many rumors flying about, it’s easy to lose track of which ones to keep an eye on. I myself am very excited (even though I won’t be attending… tear) and while there are so many potentially juicy details that may emerge from this year’s event, I have a few that I’m hoping will absolutely, positively come to fruition. So, without further ado, I give to you my wish list ( in no particular order) for next week’s 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo! [Continue Reading]

So, What’s Kojima Productions Up to These Days?

Hey kids, have you been sitting around lately saying to yourself, “Man, I wonder what Kojima is up to these days.” If that sounds like you then you’re in luck…kinda.

Earlier this week, an ad appeared in Famitsu magazine possibly showcasing what may be Kojima and crew’s next project. The ad is pretty open to interpretation, but does have the date 2009. 5. 18 written on it with a web address underneath. The site is very similar to the add, with overcast clouds covering a field of dried up grass and trees.  While it’s anybody’s guess as to what any of this really means, a couple of ideas immediately come to mind. Some have said that you can see Solid Snake’s face amongst the group of clouds in the add. If this is true it may mean the next entry into the Metal Gear series, or the often rumored Xbox 360 version.

While it isn’t a stretch to presume that Kojima will once again venture into the franchise that has made him a household name among gamers everywhere, I’m hoping that’s all a rouse, and that the game will be a new IP from Kojima productions. The Metal Gear franchise is one of gaming’s best, but we live in an era where closure within a series is looked down upon, and I see it as an unfortunate trend.  Sequelitis is a serious threat to innovation and originality, and while Kojima will likely turn gold into whatever he touches, wouldn’t you gamers like to see him do something other then Metal Gear? I know I would, but that’s just me

Top 10 Franchises That Deserve A Retro Update

Growing up, a pixel used to be a boy’s best friend. Nowadays, everything all fancy, and “rendered” with anti-aliasing. What’s the fun of that? When we were kids, not having a definitive face on our character meant that it was easier for us to imagine that we were that character with the giant sword and magic spells.

“Mega Man 9″ may not seem like the most innovative game of the year, but, for long-time gamers it is a welcome homecoming for a franchise that has gone astray from its roots. Over the last 30 years of gaming “innovation” has driven many on-going franchises into the ground with constant reworking of beloved classics. Unfortunately, these “updates” don’t always pan out too well, and the only thing that is similar between a new title and an original, are the characters – and sometimes even that’s a stretch.  Sure, “Super Mario 64″ introduced the series to 3D very successfully, but for every success there have been more than a few failures.

Hopefully, “Mega Man 9″ will be such a success that some of gaming’s oldest franchises may stop and take note of their roots, and maybe their next release will be an old-school “update.” Here’s a list of the 10 franchises that could stand for a trip down memory lane – preferably in glorious 8 (or 16) bits. Kojima/ MGS 4 signing @ Uniqlo NYC

True game head DW was on hand for the MGS 4 Kojima signing at the clothing store, Uniqlo in NYC. The fans were out in droves and excited to get a glimpse and signature of the legendary game producer. Also at the event were the limited edition MGS 4/ Uniqlo collabo tees which flew off the shelves. Unfortunately Kojima wasn’t signing those ( proab’ to avoid the ridiculous ebay prices they would go for). Another plus for the event was the beautiful actress Yumi Kikuchi (Raging Raven) also giving signatures to eager fans. The event was great and it was nice to meet the man himself! Props to Konami, New York Tokyo and Uniqlo for this hot event! Peep the video below.
