E3 ‘09: Post E3 Thoughts From DW

If you ever had the opportunity I would highly recommend that you go to E3. While the cost of attending can be steep, I think that it would well worth it for anyone who plays and loves video games.  If you go their to work though, I’m sure you may look at the experience a little differently.  For those of us who don’t have to work when we attend, it’s can be a great experience.

I really enjoyed God of War 3. Wasn’t that expected?  Well being the last game in the series, Sony needs to out do themselves in every wa yet again.  With the way things look, it looks like they may just accomplish a three-peat.  I don’t think the game will any one “specific” desire of a gamer but it may do a good job of satisfying you mostly.  It was easy to play and fun maintaining everything you know about the series and adding some new gameplay mechanics here and there.  It may not have the visual fidelity of Heavy Rain but it is still impressive looking; especially when you consider the camera work and other visual tones added to the game.  Sony seemed to have been in full force this year and they had way more titles to show off compared to the last two E3 Shows.  If you haven’t seen the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves live demo during the E3 press conference, I highly recommend that you do.  Naughty Dog will go down in history as being one the greatest developers for Sony of all time. E3 ‘09: Final Fantasy XIII US Revealed

In this extended trailer you not only get to see the Summons Shiva and Odin, but for the non-Otaku fans out there, this is the complete English voice over; with the English menu system.  As you can see, from the summoning magic, it works a lot like Final Fantasy VII, per SquareEnix via a Charge-Gauge.  Though the comparable system to FFVII wasn’t intentional, expect an even faster battle system than the one used in the Final Fantasy VII.

E3 ‘09: PSP Go Finally Revealed

E3 09

Sony sucks at keeping secrets, and their lack of secrecy on their newest handheld proves just that. Yes, we all pretty much new it was coming, but days before its official unveiling at E3, a leaked episode of Qore spills the beans on Sony’s new handheld; the PSP Go!.

Various leaks across the world wide web reveal Sony’s new handheld and its various functions via the June issue of Sony’s video magazine, Qore. Most of the rumors that led up to the PSP Go’s debut have seem to proven true. The system’s screen will cover the face buttons and slide up when access to those buttons is needed. The PSP Go! will be even smaller then its previous PSP-3000 brother, and will do away with the UMD drive, meaning all forms of media will be downloaded for the system. The PSP Go! will come equipped with 16 gigs of internal flash memory as well as multiple slots for memory stick slots, so people will not have to worry about running out of space for all those incoming downloads.

My Big, Fat E3 Wish List

E3 09

So gamers, E3 is only a couple of days away, and there is much to be excited for. The rumor mill has been working overtime for this year’s expo, even more so then in years past. With a slew of hardware and software debuts rumored to be on the way, this year’s E3 is shaping up to be epic, but with so many rumors flying about, it’s easy to lose track of which ones to keep an eye on. I myself am very excited (even though I won’t be attending… tear) and while there are so many potentially juicy details that may emerge from this year’s event, I have a few that I’m hoping will absolutely, positively come to fruition. So, without further ado, I give to you my wish list ( in no particular order) for next week’s 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo! [Continue Reading]

E3 2008 – KillZone 2, is it Delivering?

The drama behind this game won’t stop.  Actually its nothing like the drama behind the fanboy reaction to Final Fantasy going to XBOX 360.  In particular, we’re referring to that dreaded trailer from way back when, that set a standard so high for Guerrilla.  I wonder how they felt about that after making it? Echoed thoughts of “can we do this” is all I can imagine them thinking.

At the end of the day, this game, like Halo, is just another FPS that is trying to stand above a pile of other FPSs.  Those of us who got to see it live feel like the game is looking almost as good as the promised bench mark trailer from 2006.  What I find funny about the hype behind KillZone, is that people are solely basing its success on its visual appeal.  Guerrilla has yet to provide any development diaries, or detailed information, about the gameplay elements for KILLZONE 2.  Still, all the destructible environments (you’ve seen it before, maybe since BLACK), giant machine guns, crazed enemy AI, and other bells and whistles, are always fun to look at.

E3 2008 – Far Cry 2

Check out the Far Cry 2 trailer for PC/360/PS3. The ultimate sand box game can’t be out sooner. Don’t forget that the developers decided not to release a demo for this game (perahps something will hit the internet for the PC).  Boo! I love this little presentation for the game though, is that Djimon Hounsou I hear giving a synopsis?

It’s 50¢ mutha F@#$*^

Here we have the the sequel to 50 Cent: Bulletproof. In this new game, the second player’s character can be at least one of two other members of the G-Unit Clan: Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks or their DJ, DJ Whoo Kid.

Each character specializes in different combat techniques and skills. It’s still unknown if the former G-Unit rapper, Young Buck or any other G-Unit Records members for that mater, will be featured. The game will include vehicle missions such as a driver-and-turret-gunner for the Humvee road chase and a helicopter-borne shootout. In addition, the game will have more exclusive music than the first and 50 Cent will make an exclusive track for the game.

E3 2008 – Singularity

Games like these tend to get over looked during E3. I didnt’ even know there was a new Kirby game out until recently but that’s okay.  With the fray of the ignored is a yet another first person shooter; Sorry, I can’t make it any more exciting than that. I can almost hear you go, “not another FPS”. Anyways, Singularity falls into the vein of time control.

Coming along for the development ride is Raven Software, the guys that worked on Soldier of Fortune.  Ever since TimeShift, I’ve been concerned about the application of time control, and time travel within First Person Shooters. It would seem that your character is either too weak, too powerful, or has no power at all.  What’s worse are the weak stories that accompany some games that approach this idea.  Don’t get me wrong, TimeSplitters, in all its simplicity did a great job, and so did Orcania of Time.  We’ll give it a chance though, hoping that it delivers.

E3 2008 – Street Fighter IV … Parry?

Perhaps not the parry proper, but a descent evolution of it. We all wondered what those tech moves where when we first got a glimpse of it back way back when the first trailer for this game aired.

It’s actually interesting to see how this will play out in battles. Unlike before, when you parried a moved, you were stuck in your characters animation stance for half a second or two. Now, in SFIV, this is a lot of time, you can capitalize on that loss time. Here in this new trailer you see that your character takes the damage, and moves on to deliver his/her blow tot he opposing character.

This is nothing new if you’ve been following fighting games for a while, but the above video shows how the idea for the new system (Revenge) should workout during battles.
