BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Review: Watch Out For The New Guy

BlazBlue

Introducing a brand new 2D fighting game is a challenging proposition for any game company given the current state of the market. As it stands right now, most fighting games have shifted to full 3D (and some back to 2D) and are in their fourth, or tenth, or even twelfth iteration. And that’s just on the development side of things, the even tougher sell is to the fans. The gamers that play fighting games are a devout bunch, clinging to franchises that were birthed over 15 years ago, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, bringin a new game into the fray is almost like committing an act of war. There has to be a lot of power behind an entirely new game that’s going to make an impression on the market, and on the fans, but Aksys Games’ Arc System Works developed “BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger” is the first game in a long time that has a shot of winning over some of those fans. BlazBlue Preview: The Wheel Of Fate Is Turning

BlazBlue

I remember the day a few years ago when Sir-G asked me if I had seen the trailer for the hot new fighting game by the guys that did “Guilty Gear.” He was a bit more on top of his game that day than I was, and he sent me the trailer below to the Japanese arcade fighter known as “BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger.” Sir-G knows I love fighting games (I’m not good at them at all, but I love playing them) and after watching the trailer once… then twice… then a third time I knew this game was something I had to play, and that the wait was going to be a long one. From the footage that was available at the time I could already tell that the game looked beautiful, sounded amazing, and there was a good chance that it was something I would really enjoy playing. But, that was well over a year ago, and I’ve kept up on the “BlazBlue” news since then, even making sure it was at the top of our list to cover at this year’s NY Comic-Con. However, I always watched but never touched. I wanted to experience the entire game on my own terms. This is something I don’t reserve for many games, but I figured “BlazBlue” deserved it. However, that wait came to an end earlier this week, when I finally had a chance to sit down and play the game, and, at first glance, it’s all I hoped it would be. [Continue Reading]

BlazBlue Wants To Immortalize Your Drive

The team over at Aksys Games know what big fans the TrueGameHeadz crew are of their gorgeous upcoming 2D fighter, “BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger,” that they sent us word of a little contest they are running. Check out the video below of some of the people whose drive are helping make “BlazBlue” possible, and then head over to Aksys’ “BlazBlue” site, and tell them what drives you. If your drive is selected, your words could be immortalized in the game’s instruction manual. I know it’s a pretty vague question, but feel free to take this opportunity to get on your soapbox and let the world know what keeps you going. Oh… and I’m sure they’d appreciate as few answers as possible that say “my car.”

BlazBlue and Guilty Gear at Aksys’ Comic Con Booth

I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m looking forward to Aksys Games’ “BlazBlue” as much as I am “Street Fighter IV.” Created by the famed Arc System Works, “BlazBlue” looks absolutely gorgeous, and I’m a real sucker for great looking 2D fighters. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not very good at them, and most of you would kick my ass, but I do love playing them. At last week’s New York Comic Con we stopped by Askys’ booth to get a look at the beautiful “BlazBlue” and its spiritual predecessor “Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus.” If you doubt my judgment on just how good “BlazBlue” looks… just watch the video, and then go get your PS3s ready.
