Resident Evil Creator Intends on Bringing First 3-D Horror Game!

The next “Next-Gen” revolution is shaping up to be directly opposite what this current gen has become. When the original XBOX and PS2 did so well, companies braced for the current console gen of XBOX360 and PS3 by gobbling up small dev houses and created huge studios. Citing that the move to HD would require great resources and creative talent to create games. As project costs continue to rise, we’ve seen a large number of fairly successful developers close their doors or be shut down by the parent company in order to drive “revenue” for the under achievers in the umbrella.

This has led to a ruthless corporate culture in creating games that has seen a bunch of creatives say screw this, we are going to branch out on our own. Not long ago we heard of Dead or Alive/Ninja Gaiden creative lead Tomonobu Itagaki starting his own Valhalla Game Studios, now we have the creator of the Resident Evil and Viewtiful Joe franchises, Shinji Mikami forms anew production company (Tango) with eye towards 3-D horror game.

“One of the reasons I’m building a company is to raise the game makers of the future, people who haven’t gone pro yet,” Mikami told Famitsu. “Game development is often overseen from a pure business perspective here, which is unique to Japan, and I have the impression that environment tends to prune away young talent. I really want to make Tango a company run from a creator’s perspective, one that expands upon new talent.” – via 1up

With many of these respected developers feeling the corporate “squeeze”, it will be interesting to see what the next-generation of gaming will include. Motion control is here to stay, and with 3-D enabled televisions coming, we might see 3-D glasses enter into the gaming arena as well. “When it comes to my personal desires, I’d like to make a true 3-D horror game, something where you’d use glasses like in the Avatar film,” he said. “It’s been my goal since the original Resident Evil to be the first in the industry to make a 3-D game. There needs to be a large 3-D television-owning userbase before that can happen, but I always like trying out new things first.”

Mikami is currently finishing up the title Vanquish (pictured above) which appears to be an action shooter, we have to be exited that he’s going back to the horror genre.
