Petition To Stop PlayStation Network Charging For Online

Yesterday I received a circular from someone on PlayStation Network; it was a petition detailing that PSN where going to start charging for use of the systems online capabilities. I tried to take this with a pinch of salt, but a small amount of digging showed it to be more than just harmless rambling.

To say that the PS3 online experience leaves a lot to be desired is something of an understatement, especially while Xbox Live still exists, which brings me to my main point; why do people like me still own a Playstation when Microsoft’s admittedly flawed machine is obviously superior in terms of online support, list of titles, exclusivity deals, etc. I’ll tell you why, its because we’re purists to the franchise; we grew up on Playstation, got wowed by PS2 and although it took all the time in the world to finally be released, we were ready for the Playstation 3 to fill the big shoes of its predecessors, and while Metal Gear Solid 4 and the like managed to show off the hardware for a while, it did little mask the £500 wound it left in our wallets, or the fact that all the other great games had already being on Xbox months earlier, with a wealth of other titles we’d never see. All of this without mentioning the whole Fallout 3 DLC outrage.

And then this happened, they try to charge us to use something everyone else gets for free, right after they’ve already bled us dry, like some greedy pimp who we’re all too afraid to start mouthing off to. Well we damn well should. I, like many others, have been steadily losing faith in this system since day one, but its not beyond repair, all it needs is few half decent original IP’s, and not to pull flagrant dick moves like charging us for online play in a world where better exists for less.

This is literally me on my knee’s praying to a God I don’t believe in to save a once loyal dog whose beginning to look a little rabid; if, like me, you still have an ounce of faith in your monolithic black colossus of a console then I beseech you, get your name on this petition somehow, or its gonna be ‘Old Yeller’ all over again.

I own a PS3 and never owned a ps1/2. So this idea that the PS3 is the fatal heartbeat of the fanboy is false. I tend to go with quality over quantity. The success and depth of a lot of PS3 games are not found in XBOX. Halo? What kind of franchise is that? Piss poor cliche storyline trying to pass itself off as something new. It only did well because of the multiplayer, which didn’t offer a lot in terms of something new.

XBox is Microsoft. If you want to discuss what they bring to the online network of course they will have more movies and content. It’s friggin’ microsoft. A majority of businesses that try and go up against them end up getting crushed or bought out. It’s amazing that Sony has been able to do this well against them. Their greatest titles, ones that Sony CREATED, are ripped out from under them since Microsoft has the money to do it.

It’s the, “I want more for less” that has created this Wal-Mart lifestyle that gives us crappier products. Xboxs that overheat, scratch and destroy disks, people replacing their system 3 or 4 times…really? All in a move to trump the other next gen consoles. Make no mistake, everything Microsoft does is a business move. They care very little for gaming itself or you the gamer. Maybe the overheating I can overlook, but the disk scratching thing is what puts me over the top. Out of all the R&D no one caught this? Something they ended up fixing for pennies per thousand units.

I have faith that at least Sony attempts to better the console world by creating a quality product. Sure I can get a burger, large fries, and jumbo drink for 4 dollars at McDonalds, but I don’t want that crap in my body. I certainly don’t want the XBox in my house.
