Faceez Review: Careful, Or You’ll Get Stuck Like That

When the original DS was released, included on board the system memory was a unique little program called Pictochat. Most DS users should be at least familiar with the program since you see it as an option every time you load up the system. When the DSi was released it followed suit and came packaged with a handful of different pack-in programs as well, one of which allowed you to edit pictures taken with the DSi’s camera. While it was a fairly robust little application, it was still limited in some capacities, and, overall, it just lacked a personality. Well, now Neko entertainment has taken some of the functionality of the photo editing software, improved on it, and released “Faceez” to the masses to tweak all their favorite pictures.

Be warned, you’re not getting anything close to Photoshop here, but you are getting a fun little piece of software that is going to allow you to have some fun with your photos. “Faceez” allows you to take pictures, either within the application, or import them from your system memory and create unique little characters with them. The photos that are used are cropped down to fit inside the “Faceez” head and from there you can add a host of decorations and animations to each image. You can then go on to save them, and even export them back out to your system menu, and use them as your DSi welcome image. The program even includes some technology that will instantly animate various parts of each “Faceez,” which means that the eyes in the photo will blink, and the mouths will move. It’s actually quite a bit eerie, but still a fun little addition to the DSiWare.

Simply put, “Faceez” is a non-game. It’s not meant to allow users to do anything other than pass the time by messing around with your photos, and for what it’s trying to do, it does a great job. DSi owners that like to make their friends look silly will have a great time adding funny hats and mustaches to them. For only 200 DSi Points it’s easily more fun than the included photo editor, and is a must have for anyone who actually uses the DSi for photos. For everyone else, it’s not a bad impulse buy, but you may prefer to spend your points elsewhere.

Rating: ★★★½☆

“Faceez” was developed by Neko Entertainment for the Nintendo DSi, and was released on February 22, 2010.
