5 Videogame Movies That Got Something Right!: #1 – Silent Hill

01It’s no surprise that movies based off of video games tend to suck pretty hard. However, through all the convoluted and unfaithful adaptations, there were a few films that have managed to do something right. I don’t mean that the films were great by any means, but that they managed to accurately replicate an aspect of the game in one form or another pretty well. It could be anything from the costume design to the mannerisms of the characters, and we’ll be taking a look at a few films that have done a good job in visually translating its source material to the silver screen. Be sure to check in everyday as we count down to the number one movie to see who made the top of our list!

Rounding out our list at number one is my personal favorite video game movie Silent Hill. Now I will admit I am a huge fan of the series, and so my view might be a bit biased. With that out of the way, I’ve chosen Silent Hill as the king of the hill (no pun intended), because I felt the filmmakers did such a great job in bringing the creatures and atmosphere of SIlent Hill to life. From the scene in the video below, you’ll see one of the first encounters with the creatures of Silent Hill; one that was inspired from the same scenario in “Silent Hill 2.” When I saw it for the first time in theaters, I couldn’t help but get goose-bumps from how well they mimicked the game. The rest of the movie would follow suit, and recreate famous scenes made memorable from the franchise. Silent Hill did decent enough at the box office to spawn a forthcoming sequel (which I am very happy about). It may not have been a great film, but by video game movie standards I think it’s one of the best along side Mortal Kombat! [Continue Reading]

5 Videogame Movies That Got Something Right!: #2 – Mortal Kombat

02It’s no surprise that movies based off of video games tend to suck pretty hard. I don’t mean that the films were great by any means, but that they managed to accurately replicate an aspect of the game in one form or another pretty well. At #2 we take a look at the original “Mortal Kombat” (we shall pretend the other “MK” movie was never made). No matter how much you may hate video game movies, it’s pretty hard to deny how good “Mortal Kombat” actually turned out to be, in terms of staying true to its source. In particular, the fights scenes were some of the best ever produced. The encounter with Johnny Cage (whom I thought was better on film than in the game) and Scorpion was handled extremely well, as I though it showcased some of the character’s signature moves without being to over the top, and still showing off how skilled the fighters really are. You had Scorpions trade mark yell “Get over here…” and the addition of making Scorpion’s harpoon, an animated creature that worked better than one would have expected. They managed to also throw in a little nod to Cage’s Shadow Kick, and I know you couldn’t help but get giddy on the inside when Johnny Cage defeated Scorpion and his autographed photo fell on his remains, just like in the game. This was definitely one of the better examples of adapting a video game to the silver screen and an adaption gamers can agree that worked! [Continue Reading]

Want To See The Number One Contender For A Ninja Gaiden Movie?

ninjathumbWhen was the last time you saw a good ninja movie? If it’s been a long time, but I think that might change come November 25th! After watching the trailer for Ninja Assassin, I couldn’t help but think of Tecmo’s classic “Ninja Gaiden.” This movie reminds me of what a “Ninja Gaiden” flick could be (minus the demons of course). I understand it’s still too early to get excited, but this trailer does a damn fine job of showing why we all love ninjas. And my man is pretty nasty with that chain-sickle. I won’t get into details so just head over to the official site here for the low down on the story and take a look at the trailer below. Watch the trailer and try telling me you couldn’t help but think of Ryu Hybasu from the recent “Ninja Gaiden” games! Tecmo… I hope you’re watching this if you ever plan to make a “Ninja Gaiden” movie. Hire these guys and we will forgive you that “Dead Or Alive” movie! [Continue Reading]

5 Videogame Movies That Got Something Right!: #3 – Tomb Raider

number3It’s no surprise that movies based off of videogames tend to suck pretty hard. At #3 we look at Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring the lovely Angelie Jolie. I will be honest, I personally feel the movie wasn’t that bad. Especially compared to other movies in the genre. With talks of a new movie in the works (minus Jolie), this time around hopefully Hollywood can follow Edios and do a much needed reboot to the movie version of the franchise. Today’s scene in particular is the opening of the movie. In it I feel Lara Croft’s key trademarks were showcased in this action packed sequence. You’ll see her infamous flips that defy gravity and my personal favorite, her relentless use of her dual handguns. And they even went an extra step further by at least showing how she handles an almost infinite amount of bullets. Besides raiding tombs, the filmmakers kept the translation pretty true to the source material and kept everything that made Lara pretty popular amongst us gamers.

5 Videogame Movies That Got Something Right!: #4 – Doom

Today coming in at #4 is Doom, released in 2005. Now I agree with you all in saying that this movie pretty much sucked ass (Its not like the source material was that great in the first place). Talking about how bad everything else was in the movie is a whole other article (I’m looking at you Rock). But I have to say one scene stood out to me in particular. The scene in question has to deal with Doom 3’s demon dog a.k.a “Pinky”. I felt this one scene recreated all the famous hallmarks of the franchise pretty accurate. You have your trademark chainsaw being used to full effect, crazy first person camera action going on and a faithful adaption of old Pinky from the graphical benchmark setting Doom 3. Take a look at “Pinky” in his original game incarnation and then peep his silver screen debut. So do you think they nailed it down as far as translating him to the big screen?

5 Videogame Movies That Got Something Right!: #5 – Hitman

Today’s film is Hitman , which was released in 2007 and comes in at #5 on our list. There are two scenes that stand out to me, and if you’ve played any of the games, you should be pretty familiar with the scenario. The first scene is when Agent 47 gets his next assignments from Diana on his flashy laptop computer. This was an important part of the games because not only did you get your assignments for the next missions, but it helped to narrate the story as well.  The second is a typical setup in the game where you might be frisked for weapons whenever approaching your next target and so you would have to find a way to conceal them. You had the options of hiding the weapon in some form of package or just drop it somewhere out of site to be used later again. For those who are huge fans of the franchise, I am sure the syringe brought a smile to your face. Check out the scenes below and chime in on the comments as to whether they recreated the game accurately! [Continue Reading]

UPDATED: Talented Character Designer For Ghostbusters Wii Gets The Shaft

UPDATE: Red Fly Studio’s CEO Dan Borth has responded to the claims of not crediting Dan Schoening. Read what he had to say here.

This one kinda hits it close to home. It’s not uncommon for an artist to get the short end of the stick in the industry. But, every time it does happen, it’s really disappointing. The latest in such situations deals with the recently released “Ghostbusters” on the Wii. If you hadn’t noticed, it uses a stylized take on the famed characters instead of trying to replicate the look of the HD versions of the game. The Wii’s style was inspired by an independent artist by the name of Dan Schoening. His Ghostbusters renditions laid the foundation for the Wii’s stylized look. If you take a look at some of his original work, you’ll see the inspirations all throughout his pieces, and personally I feel his work is miles better than the final look they settled on for the game. Below are his words posted from his deviantART blog about the whole matter of not getting recognized… all he wanted was his name in the games credits! Also of note, he is a very accomplished artist as he has worked on hit shows such as Cartoon Network’s Ed, Edd, & Eddy. [Continue Reading]
