Another Week in Gaming …

And so the eyes have it. Well, all of us who eyed someone else with a PS3 on the train, in the streets, around the city that is. Let’s not jump for joy just yet Sony, your fan base is still upset about a shoddy 2.00 firmware update that practically made Assassins Creed, and perhaps affected Call of Duty 4 to levels of unplayability. Someone even had the ghast to report PS3 bricking at www.charlieoscardelta.com. Rumors, truths, half-truths. Truthfully, after updating 2.00 suffering from COD4 diembodiment was eminent. Swift behavior from Infinity Ward to bandaid the situation was a welcome. IW went on to promise last week that a patch update will arrive … soon for the consoles. The PC patch, 1.2, is currently out. Rock Band is out as well and the reception has been hotter than a night at the mosh-pits.

Don’t expect any bruises though as this game is smooth and delivers on promises of stardom. The same can’t be said about Singstar but the presentation for that games leaves me to wonder: this is the menu system that I expected for the PSN online store, WTF? A similliar expression from the PS3 crowd as the fabled Orange Box was delayed yet again for the PS3.

No one wants to be told they can’t program. Personally, it’s easy to submit to that as the profession itself is nearly impossible to master. Developers who try to slap games onto PS3 architecture without taking a bow from teams like Insomniac [Resistance], or Infinity Ward [Call of Duty 4] learn a brutal lesson at taking part in the slap-code-practice. It was a fact in the era of PS2, lazy ports show, and its a fact now. Kudos to the gents for at least attempting to release it before years end though. I’m not done with you PS3. Fatal Inertia - you know that wannabe-Wipeout-racer. pfft. Wipeout HD will show you how its done, fear not, ecept the fact that that title was pushed back till 2008. “Mines.”

In nicer news, its’ official Final Fantasy XIIIs will be exclusive for PS3 according to Tetsuya Nomura, quoting his Dengeki Magazine interview -

“Of course, Versus is PS3 exclusive…”

Nuff said. Big words from Nomura as he feeds the Bluray machine claiming that the leap in presentation of FF XIII will be like FFVI to FFVII. Better still that MASS EFFECT is gaining some good reviews among questionable battle systems. Indeed, it’s a beast of an undertaking, and personally yours truly wouldn’t mind loosing sleep over this title but as it turns out Mass Effect is not just a beautiful face.

The thing about certain online games though, especially FPS’es, is the ability to bring in the single player aspect into an online all man frag fest, without a hickup and adding more quality, replayability to the game. A tall order, and lots of headaches for developers we’re sure. The thing is that Crysis is an FPS that not only looks as good, or better the above screen shot, but also delivers a reasonable story. The wide open spaces within online multiplayer have been getting so so reviews but you can blame it on those close quarter combats gamers have been abusing on other major titles as of late. Game Daily hit the PC Beast with a score of 9/10, IGN 9.4/10, Eurogamer 9/10, GampePro 4.6/5.0 ..and the high numbers go on and on. Crytek proved that their mega hit, Far Cry, was not the only FPS monster they were capable of releasing on the unsuspecting markets.

If you, or your PC, can’t handle the above DX10 monster, let me recommend an old friend - Contra. Contra 4 to be exact -

Finally a contra that remains true to the original soup recipe - blazing gun madness. A word to the wise before you run out and buy this game, or if you decide to program for PS3, its flicking hard man! Best of luck.
