Space Ark Trailer Invokes Retro Classics

The press release announcing that Strawdog Studios’ upcoming creation, entitled “Space Ark,” called out three of my all time favorite Taito classics; “Rainbow Islands,” “Bubble Bobble” and “Arkanoid.” When you drop a heavy hitting list of names like that, you better have something to show for it, and based on the tiny bit of gameplay showed off in “Space Ark” trailer it looks like there is actually some addictive potential here. We’ll just have to wait and see…

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Producer Picks His Favorite Box Art

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Box Arts

When Japanese games get ported for a U.S. release they usually go through a lot of changes. There are the obvious ones like text localization, along with some less obvious ones like fixing bugs, but there’s usually one that is obvious to the consumer right away – the box art. When the changes for the U.S. release of “Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes” were announced it quickly became clear that the box art was going to have to change, simply based on the additions and subtractions to the roster, but the overall changes run a bit deeper than that. I recently had the opportunity to talk to the game’s producer, Ryota Niitsuma, about the box art differences between “Ultimate All-Stars” and “Cross Generation of Heroes,” and then had him pick his favorite … and you might be surprised by his selection. Dev Box Interview: Press Start Studio’s Philippe Rapin

Dev Box Interview: Press Start Studio's Philippe Rapin

It usually takes a small army to create the video games that we play, and, most of the time, all of the focus gets put on the game itself, and not on the people that came together to make it. Our Dev Box interview series takes a look at some of the unsung heroes (developers, producers, artists, etc) that have committed their lives to entertaining all of us. In this week’s Dev Box we are letting Press Start Studio’s Producer Philippe Rapin, who recently worked on “Twin Blades: The Reaping Vanguard,” for the iPhone and Xbox Live’s Indie Games provide us some insight into who he is as a gamer, and how he ended up working in the game’s industry.

Name: Philippe Rapin
Title: Producer
Company: Press Start Studio
First title worked on: The Legend of Spyro : The Eternal Night (mobile)
Most recent title worked on: Twin Blades: The Reaping Vanguard (iPhone/iPod Touch, XBLIG)

Monster Hunter Frontier Site Up – Are PS3 Fans Still Baffled?

monsterHunterFrontier

Wow! That’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I saw the new Monster Hunter Frontier web site.  If you haven’t heard already, Monster Hunter Frontier will hit the 360 sometime this year.  For those of you who don’t know what Monster Hunter is exactly, it is as the title suggests; players take on the role of a hunter in a fantasy environment and complete quests by seeking out monsters to hunt or capture. Originally released on PlayStation 2, the game was a cult, and then a raving success in Japan.

Blood Bowl Review: The Football Video Game Based On A Board Game

Blood Bowl

Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, and other fantasy characters aren’t new to video games. They have become a cliche and are often seen in online roleplaying games to make a quick buck for investors. However, in those types of games you often align yourselves with friends to defeat a great evil or just grab some loot. None of these games give you the option of playing a violent variation of football. This is where “Blood Bowl” comes in; a grid-based board game developed by Games Workshop which made its debut in the 80s and still has a strong following today. This isn’t the first time “Blood Bowl” has been made into a video game, but it is the first to make use of the internet and the latest version of the original rules. [Continue Reading]

Capcom just sent us an updated Press Release statement detailing the official release date on Super Street Fighter IV, as well as other games expected from them this year. Monkey Ball Mini-Games Go Bananas

Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll

What would a “Monkey Ball” game on the Wii be without mini-games? Just a whole lot of primates encased in balls looking for bananas I suppose. Either way, the new trailer for the upcoming “Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll” showcases some of the diversions from the balance board-based title that will be out in a few weeks. [Continue Reading]
